Summary

Any questions regarding the relationship between the makeup of a company's balance sheet and the outcome of financial ratios should now be answered. Using the NikoTech case as an example, it should also be clear that there are many creative ways to bury operational shortcomings in this report. Several million dollars were found on the balance sheet in the form of bad debt, obsolete inventories and underdepreciated equipment. While mostly legal, this financial sleight of hand only postpones the day of reckoning, when write-offs must be taken. As the NikoTech income statement analysis will soon reveal, propping up short-term results at the expense of the balance sheet is really a zero sum game in which the company (and its shareholders) always comes up on the short end of the stick.
