Preface

Although firmly embedded in the lexicon of international trade, supply chain management cannot be considered a legitimate business discipline until quantitative links are created between operational execution and financial results. As much a business philosophy as a methodology, the globalization of supply chain management practices is perhaps the most relevant topic in business today. With increasing pressure on landed costs, lead times and inventory levels, the financial success of today's international companies relies on the ability to take strategies to a tactical level.

Supply Chain Vector analyzes the major components of supply chain activities and demonstrates the relationship between operational execution and financial results found on the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement. Founded on a philosophical understanding of the tenets of supply chain management, this book takes the reader through the early years of international trade and the commercial events that have shaped our business world. Globalization, outsourcing and governmental policy are all analyzed within the context of how modern business practices have evolved since the beginning of the last century.

The hypothesis that strong financial results are contingent upon landed cost control, lead time rationalization and inventory management is articulated throughout the text. Based on a contemporary case study of a global contract manufacturer and supported by dozens of examples, Supply Chain Vector establishes in a definitive fashion the causal relationship between execution and results. By presenting a fusion of time-tested business practices and modern business methodologies, this book enables academics, businesspeople and students to understand the true essence of supply chain management and its role in bringing products to global markets.
