The purpose of this chapter is to demonstrate the possible application of Six Sigma tools in reducing variation across global supply chains. If anything, the analysis should be proof that there is an entire methodology behind the Six Sigma philosophy and that use of the tools has legitimate value in any business environment. It must be pointed out, however, that the techniques discussed here are not a comprehensive depiction of the tool set. Many other tools are available to sigma teams, including trend charts, failure mode and effects analysis, affinity diagrams, histograms, hypothesis testing and correlation analysis. When applied in their entirety to a project, the probability of success is very high. The goal of the last two chapters has been to present the Six Sigma philosophy within the context of reducing variation in global business models. Consistent with that philosophy, the tools discussed here focus on identifying causal relationships, prioritizing problems, identifying root causes and eliminating variance. If these chapters inspire managers to either adopt the sigma philosophy or continue with ongoing use of the methodology, that goal will have been achieved.
