How Can You Align e-Learning with Business Goals?
First, let's look at some aspects that shape the business value proposition for e-learning, including: reach, cost-effectiveness, business drivers, and diverse learner requirements.
Unlimited Reach to Individual Learners
Self-paced e-learning can be taken any time and is therefore a just-in-time approach for development of important knowledge and skills. e-Learning can be taken at any place —in the office, at home or other locations, which eliminates the travel needs and costs. Skills acquisition and knowledge development will take place at any pace and any path, as the learning experience is solely driven by the participant, and therefore very personalized. Anyone in the organization can engage in e-learning and participate and share experience and knowledge in e-learning collaboration sessions. The potential cost savings depend on a combination of a number of factors which need to be assessed on a program-by-program basis, including the cost of travel, hotel, facilities, administration, instructors, course materials production and shipping, and audio visual.
Cost Effectiveness
The overall development and deployment costs of e-learning have proven to be between 30 to 70 percent less expensive than classroom training (Deloitte Consulting Research 2001).
Support of Critical Business Drivers
e-Learning has been proven capable of supporting the realization of important business goals, such as shown in Figure 2-1. Many of the chapters and organizational case studies of e-learning focus on various aspects and applications of e-learning to achieving these goals.

Varied Applications for Diverse Learner Needs
e-Learning initiatives have been applied to meet learning needs on a wide variety of topics to reach varied audiences of professions and employees, including global employees, new hires, executives, and the sales force. These programs have also been utilized to reach and extend value outside the organization to prospective employees, customers, suppliers and partners.
