Content Life Cycle Management

Besides creating high-demand content, organizations must maintain a current content library or a single logical repository to keep up with the fast-changing needs of the learners. With content being a key cost consideration in the development of learning tools, a balance between content life cycle and reuse must be established. Determining which content items are to be kept for use later and which can be discarded can be done effectively only if such decisions are based on policy, practice, and workflow. Reusable objects and tools allow existing content to be repurposed, thereby reducing the cost of curriculum development.

For portals such as FELC and PEC at Cisco, the availability of certain products, emphasis on specific technologies, and alignment with certification exam curriculum offer useful guidelines when determining the relevance of content. Those content items with potential learning applications are archived, whereas those that appear to offer no potential learning value are removed from the database altogether.
