A Matter of Semantics


For the purposes of this book, Internet learning and e-learning are one and the same. In a productivity pyramid metaphor, e-training refers to electronic delivery of training content. Others refer to any form of electronic delivery as e-learning instead of e-training. Semantics aside, the Cisco approach is about combining readiness, skills development, and skills assessment into a single system. Whether it is referred to as e-learning or Internet learning, what matters is that it will struggle for success unless all necessary components are in place.


Hindsight Is 20/20: Training Versus E-Learning


How does education and training differ from e-learning?

E-learning provides the means to deliver education and training (and other kinds of) content. Education and training are structured learning experiences that change the knowledge or skill level of the learner.

E-learning represents the many ways to get the content to the learners. It is not just a technology.

It changes how and what we say, to whom, and when. We cannot simply put existing content "on the web" and expect it to have any meaningful learning impact. E-learning changes education and training methodologies because it changes how content is organized, delivered, received, and possibly even assimilated.

E-mail changed how we communicate because it changed how we connect to each other. It has changed the ease, frequency, and even the quality of that communication. In the same respect, voicemail has changed telephone communications. E-learning has a similar effect on education and training concepts and content, and possibly on the learner communities themselves.
