Learner Driven More Than Learner Centric

Volumes have been written about learner-centric curriculum development. Learner-centric content has always been positioned as superior to instructor-centered materials, and rightfully so, but harder to achieve in the traditional classroom. An integrated approach to e-learning aims at making available learner-driven tools.

Learner driven goes beyond learner centric in that it essentially places the control of the event in the hands of the learner. What is left for the organization to do is create incentives, set objectives, and offer the environment for the learner to take advantage of e-learning.

Empirical evidence suggests that many organizations focus on logging training hours completed by an employee. When training departments are dedicated to micromanaging the learning activity rather than the objectives and the environment, the learning process can hardly be termed learner driven. Organizations in that pattern are measuring the wrong thing (hours), so success will prove less meaningful to the company than to the training department.
