Nimble and Productive As a group of 27 professionals, the Learning and Development organization ensured a positive contribution toward the company bottom line or top line on every dollar invested in Internet learning. The team ensures a consistent and common approach to learning and development at BearingPoint locations worldwide to reduce duplication of effort and offer predictability in the learner experience. The group defines learning as a combination of knowledge and experience. The department maintains a lean organization relying on a program management office for managing Internet learning initiatives inside the organization. Key decisions regarding the program and objectives remain within the program management office, but the delivery, tools, and development functions are outsourced to providers. The team remains closely aligned with the regional business units to identify programmatic efforts. Regular meetings with the management committee of BearingPoint are held to assess and align learning priorities. At BearingPoint, the delivery management functions rest with vendors. With a range of delivery options available, employees may choose from a host of synchronous or asynchronous learning solutions. With the ebb and flow of learning development volume at BearingPoint, the group advocates an outsourced model for delivery management. An outsourced model keeps internal overhead to a bare minimum while allowing flexibility in the content development process.Besides reducing the need for an upfront financial commitment to initiate an Internet learning effort, outsourcing also offers a variety of development skills to an organization. Developing content for the Internet may well involve skills in instructional design, media graphics, web development, networking, and project management. Owning all the development skills needed to put together Internet learning content could make an initiative cost-prohibitive. Although outsourced, the development effort is coordinated through the program management office much like a consulting engagement with a project management schedule, defined deliverables, and a focus on budget.Outsourcing the learning management services function, for instance, allows BearingPoint to receive timely reports for tracking employee development schedules and accomplishment without the need for deploying a specific application for BearingPoint. |
