Look Out, Land Mines Ahead

BearingPoint has advice for other oragizations planning an Internet learning deployment. The factors to watch out for include the following:

Lack of senior management sponsorship.

An effort is doomed to fail if executive buy-in is limited or nonexistent. Without senior-level support, resistance to change will subvert even the most well-thought-through initiatives.

Technology is merely an enabler.

Success of Internet learning is determined by factors other than technology. Responsive content, learner support, business operations, and clear objectives are critical factors that ensure a positive return on investment with Internet learning projects.

Reporting and analysis.

An Internet learning effort should be supported with a strong reporting and analysis tool. Implementing a reporting tool may require system integration expertise.

User experience.

If the learners ultimately are not satisfied with the content delivered, the project is bound to be short-lived. Focusing on user experience early in the development process is critical for subsequent success with Internet learning programs.

Cannot implement the demo.

Desirable features of an e-training or e-communication solution may not be feasible for implementation within an organization's network. Limitations such as those of bandwidth and performance in a network infrastructure should be considered to set manageable expectations among potential users.
