Background

Based in Los Angeles, California, the University of Toyota meets the needs of 9000 Toyota employees, who are commonly referred to as associates, and resellers nationwide. The organization follows a university metaphor with titles such as Dean and Associate Dean to represent executive and senior management tiers within the university. The programs offered at the university can be broadly categorized as those for the dealer or reseller network and those for employees, or associates. Because the primary roles of Toyota's U.S. associates are sales, marketing, customer service, and administration, the essential content aimed for development of associates primarily deals with soft skills.

Ellie Tymer is responsible for delivering just-in-time, relevant, and accessible anytime-and-anywhere content to associates. Tymer believes that if associates understand the relevance of how learning a certain skill set can improve their productivity and performance, they are more likely to engage in learning. In her opinion, the primary goal of a learning organization should be to demonstrate the value of learning and follow it up with access to tools so that learners find the pursuit of learning easy.
