Just-in-Time Learning: A Business Function at Toyota

For those at the University of Toyota, learning is a tool for solving business problems. When they hit an impasse, associates have the option to access an electronic learning tool that enables them to perform a specific taskranging from creating project plans to preparing a presentationthrough self-driven modules. To complement the learning tool, associates can access an on-demand tutor to assist with solving the problem at hand. According to Tymer, the relevance of such learning to one's job is almost perfect.

By aligning learning with performance, the University of Toyota acts as a business function that facilitates the productivity of the core business functions, such as sales and manufacturing, also referred to as line functions. Supporting sales and marketing organizations through a just-in-time approach to training and development makes learning just as indispensable a function as technical support or billing functions for the associates working at Toyota.
