Signal Words
Sometimes "signal words" indicate that a definition is coming. The simplest of these is the word or. Other signals are and, that is, in short, and in other words.
The office manager agreed to buy pens that were comparable, or similar, to the ones they used previously.
Comparable is defined in the sentence by the word similar. The signal word is or.
