Accept, Except Although these two terms sound very much alike and, indeed, have the same root, they are very different in meaning: One combines the root meaning "to take" with the prefix meaning "in"; the other combines the root with the prefix meaning "out." Read the following examples and then answer the preview questions. The committee asked Jennifer to accept the award for creativity. Management accepted the report as accurate. Everyone was present except Henry. Send Dan all of the files except the customer file.
Which term means "to take in" or "to receive"? ________________ Which means "leaving out," "aside from," or "excluding"? ________________
When you accept something, you receive it. Sometimes accepting something indicates approval of it, as in the second example. Except means that something is being left out. Remember that the prefix ex- means "out" and you will use except correctly every time.
