Council, Counsel These terms are not uncommon and are, therefore, important ones to use correctly. One means to "advise"; the other refers to a committee. A council is a committee. To counsel is to "give advice." Counsel can also be used as a noun, meaning the advice itself. A third use of counsel is to mean lawyer, as in "Counsel advised her to remain silent." (Hint: Think of the second c in council as standing for committee.)
