Eminent, Imminent

One of these terms means "high in station" or "famous," while the other refers to something that is about to happen. Read the following examples and then answer the preview questions.

The award was given to an eminent physician.

The eminent professor was elected to the school board.

The author had waited for months; finally publication of his novel was imminent.

Change was imminent; everyone was prepared.

That attorney works for the most ________________ law firm in the city.

We heard on the radio that the arrival of the storm is ________________.

Eminent means "famous" or "lofty." Someone or something that is eminent "stands out." Imminent indicates something that is about to happen and often refers to something dangerous.
