Most businesses today, even small ones, use some form of computer technology for information processing and communications. Office workers use word-processing programs to prepare a wide range of documentsfrom simple memos and letters to complex reports and newsletters. Data-processing programs, such as spreadsheet and database programs, are used for storage and analysis of various types of information: to maintain financial records; to analyze company finances; to monitor inventories of goods, purchase orders, and shipping records; to store employee and payroll information; and to perform many other tasks.Familiarity with the basic terms of information processing and communication is essential for working in today's businesses.
