Two-Way or One-Way Communication

One common meaning for the word communicate is "interchange thoughts or information"usually by writing or speaking on one side and reading or listening on the other. This view of communication means a process that is two-way.

Communicate is also used to mean only one part of the process: the telling, informing, or asking side of the activity.

The following words are related to communicate. Which ones can be classified as two-way? Which are one-way?

exchange

inform

explain

converse

declare

listen

correspond

write

interact

ask

instruct

read

Exchange, converse, correspond, and interact require two people (or more), and we could describe them as being two-way actions. The words inform, explain, declare, write, act, and instruct refer only to the speaker or writer, and we might categorize these as one-way actions. The remaining two words, listen and read, are also one-way activities.
