Focused or Wandering Communication
Certain words indicate wandering from the subject; they mean that the speaker does not make sense or is not precise. To babble, for example, indicates speaking nonsense; to murmur indicates speaking in a way that is not easily understood. To focus or emphasize is not wandering but being direct and to the point. How would you categorize the italicized words in the following sentences?
The speaker was careful to delineate the plan very clearly.
Delineate means "outline," which helps to focus information or make it clear.
During her presentation, she began to digress and talk about other topics.
Digress means "wander from the topic or point of a communication."
