-fin-

What do the words containing the root -fin- in the following sentences mean?

What is the definition of euphoria?

Finally, I want to thank …

The beach seems to have an infinite number of grains of sand.

Roger is confined to his home while he has measles.

Have you finished writing that report yet?

The Latin word finis means "end." Finire is Latin for "to finish" and "to limit." The root that you see in the examples in the preceding sentences is -fin-. A definition is the limit of something by virtue of how it is defined. To confine is to limit or restrict movement. Infinite combines the prefix in-, meaning "not," with -fin-, giving us "without end" or "without limit."
