In his first message to the American people after the incident, US President George W. Bush proclaimed that the attacks on the World Trade Center towers and Pentagon were tantamount to "an attack on America," and a "war on America." In anther broadcast message, he stated: "Our way of life and our freedom [have] come under attack." He said that the aims of "these operations were a mass killing of Americans, scaring and intimidating the United States, and forcing it to retreat," claiming that "America has been targeted because we hold the brightest torch of freedom and our country is known as the land of opportunity throughout the world, and no one will be able to extinguish this torch," adding "although these people broke the steel [of buildings], they can not break our spirit and determination."[i] Then, his face burning with anger, he proclaimed: "A new crusade has begun," and mentioning the power of Islam in passing, he said, "the [American] giant has awakened from its slumber." Two nights later Bush addressed the American people once again, during which he also warned all countries on this planet that "your are with us or with the terrorists who [ultimately] face death and destruction."[ii] Such words and sentiments were also reflected in statements by some high-ranking members of his administration, such as Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz who proclaimed: We must put an end to governments which support terrorism," thus, the United States government equated terrorism with harboring and supporting terrorism, and proclaimed war on all such states, disregarding long-established international rules and customs.[iii] And only three days later, George W. Bush told American military commanders to prepare themselves for a long war and be prepared to do what is needed to carry out such a war. Following these words, the United States Congress on September 13, voted into law almost unanimously a bill with much hurry, giving the president the authority to use military force or any other methods and means in "this war." On September 20 George W. Bush gave his historic speech in which he practically challenged all countries on this planet to accept total US supremacy or else. In his speech he declared: "Every country anywhere must make its decision. Either your are with us or with the terrorists. From this day on, any country which continues its support of terrorism or harbors terrorists will be considered an enemy of the United States."[iv] Since here we are faced with the definition of "terrorism" as defined by the US military and security officials without any involvement by other countries or international organizations, such words only mean unconditional surrender to the US military power. In other words, it means that any county which dares not surrender to economic, political, military, and security demands of the Unites States is subject to being listed among "rogue nations" or "terrorists' bases" and "supporters of terrorists," and must await economic, political, and/or military attacks by the United States.[v]
