Chapter 8: Frames

Overview

Tables and the other HTML techniques introduced in the previous chapters provide a significant improvement in Web page layout. Many designers want even more design facilities, including multiple windows. Such expectations aren't unreasonable because these features are common in computer interfaces. Such power comes at a price, however. Frames seem to provide significant layout flexibility, but when misused, they can confuse users—or even lock them out of a site completely. While some usability pundits have given frames a bad reputation, don't let this keep you from using them. When properly used, frames have a place in the Web designer's arsenal.
