HARDWARE AUTOPLAY

Plug and Play functionality has become more reliable with the AutoPlay feature. It enables users to connect a new device or insert media and the operating system will recognize it without the need to reboot or reconfigure the computer. When the operating system senses a connection, it determines the content and automatically starts the appropriate application. The supported media types include flash cards, compact disks (CDs), digital video discs (DVDs), Zip disks, removable disk drives, PC cards, and external IEEE 1394 standard hot-plug fixed drives. The supported content types include pictures, music files, video, and mixed content. This feature greatly reduces common installation headaches. The hardware AutoPlay feature is invoked by plugging in a new device or by pressing Start Control Panel Add New Hardware (for nonPlug and Play devices).
