23.2 INSTALLATION

Before installing the management platform, develop a plan. See Chapter 13, "Out-of-the-box with HP OpenView Operations," for implementation planning. Read the

HP OpenView Operations/Performance for Windows Installation Guide . It is also recommended that you test the installation on a non-production server if possible to become familiar with OVOW prior to implementation into production. The products installed on the management server are delivered on a CD media kit.

23.2.3 Product Summary

The initial installation of the OVOW management platform includes the following products:

  • OpenView Operations for Windows

    (OVOW) Management client/server and console for heterogeneous service, application, systems management.

  • OpenView Reporter

  • OpenView

    Network Node Manager

    (NNM) Network management.

  • OpenView NNM Adaptor Automatic discovery of NNM nodes.

  • OpenView Problem Diagnosis Performs network path analysis, and presents end-to-end path information.

  • OpenView Problem Diagnosis Add-On Module (NDAOM) Provides detailed information on network performance; requires Performance Diagnosis.

  • OpenView Performance Agent Collects performance information.

  • OpenView Performance Manager Displays performance information.

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Edition

    (MSDE) Database, can be upgraded to SQL Server 2000 Enterprise or Standard Edition.

  • PERL Provides support for policies and tools.

  • JAVA Runtime Environment Runs JAVA GUI programs.

  • JAVA Application Launcher Supports the graphing components.

During the guided installation process, select the products and components that are appropriate for your enterprise solution.

23.2.4 Installation Summary

Prior to the installation, verify that you have met all prerequisites for hardware and software. They are documented in the

HP OpenView Operations Performance for Windows Installation Guide . The installation summary provides a high-level look at the installation tasks as shown in the following list:

  • Starting the installer If you need to review a transcript of the installation, the installer writes to the OVInstaller_install.log. The file is overwritten each time the installer is run.

  • System requirements checks Checks things such as Administrator privileges, prior versions of the product, operating system, memory, disk and version of the installer. Errors are showstoppers.

  • Start install wizard The product selection list contains the required (OVOW) and optional (SPIs, HP OpenView Reporter) applications. Select the server and console on the same platform or console only install option. Database account password, license acceptance and OVOW server account setup questions.

  • Check product prerequisites

  • Install the software packages - The files for the server, console, agents and optional (selected) packages are transferred from the CD's to disk.

  • Install complete Registry updates, launch the OVOW tutorial.

23.2.5 Product Directory Structure

Program files are transferred from the CD onto the file system into the following directories by default:

OVInstallDir = <drive>:\Program Files\ HP OpenView

OVDataDir = <drive>:\Program Files\ HP OpenView\Data

OVAgentInstallDir = <OVInstallDir>\packages = agent software

OVAgentDataDir = <OVAgentInstallDir>

OVDataDir\HP OVInstall = server/console install/upgrade log files

OVDataDir\HP OVInstall = <package>_install.log files

<drive>:\SystemRootDir = installer log file

<drive>:\SysTemp = OVOW agent install log file

23.2.6 Product Documentation

The product documentation is available from the OpenView support web site, http://ovweb.external.hp.com/lpe/doc_serv/. After installation, the product guides are also found on the management server in the directory <OVInstalldir>\NLS\1033\Manuals\. The OVOW documentation is listed here for reference.

23.2.7 Product Demonstration

The HP OpenView Integrated service Assurance for Windows is a live demonstration program that explains the OVOW components. The demonstration is viewable via the web at http://www.openview.hp.com/demos/indexl.

23.2.8 Training

After the installation is complete, a self-guided tutorial displays to help you become more familiar with the primary system administration tasks.
