23.3 EXPLORING THE FEATURES OF THE CONSOLE

The windows management console provides a "single pane of glass" for managing the enterprise. Built into the console are all of the tools required to focus on services, sort messages, modify, view and deploy policies, utilize tools and much more. Here are some of the features of the management console:

  • Console navigation tree (left side of the console) Managed nodes, services and tools listed hierarchically.

  • Details pane (right side of the console) Provides graphic views of the service map and a list view of the active message browser (or filtered message browser).

  • Toolbar

  • Servers folder Hierarchy of service and its supporting software tools.

  • Nodes folder Hierarchy of the managed nodes.

  • Service map Graphical view of services and nodes, capability to drill down to view root cause a problem on the impacted service and impacts on other services. The services displayed in the map are discovered automatically using the deployed policies and instrumentation.

  • Active message browser Messages from managed nodes and services, allows message filtering based on attributes such as severity, application, message text, and so on.

The console, as shown in Figure 23-1, can be installed on a separate computer for more management flexibility.
