8.3 CUSTOMIZING EXISTING DATA COLLECTIONSNNM provides many predefined collections that may be customized for your enterprise. By default, none of the collections are active. In order to activate them, copy and modify the collection. The example used in this section is the interface utilization collection, If%util . The If%util collection uses a MIB expression to calculate the available bandwidth of an interface, as described previously in this chapter. The MIB collection can be customized by copying it. First, select the If%util MIB Object from the upper part of the Data Collection & Thresholds dialog box. Then, select the existing collection from the lower section of the Data Collection & Thresholds dialog box and select Edit Figure 8-22. TheIf%util MIB Collection is copied by selecting When you copy the collection, you see the data collection dialog box shown in Figure 8-23. Provide the Source (hostname or IP address) for the collection and click [Add] . Supply a Polling Interval of 3 seconds (3s). Specify the Threshold and Rearm values. If you wish to store and view the data in order to more accurately set these values, set the Collection Mode to Store, No Thresholds . Use the default Threshold Event Number (58720263). This event generates a message in the Threshold Alarm category. To customize an event for the threshold and rearm values, specify a unique event number and click [Configure Threshold Event…] and [Configure Rearm Event…] , as described previously. Then, click [OK] from the dialog box in Figure 8-23. Select File Actions File Figure 8-23. Specify theSource, Polling Interval, Threshold , and Rearm values for the custom Figure 8-24. Start the newIf%util collection by selecting Actions File The snmpwalk command may be used to generate interface traffic when testing this data collection. This should allow the threshold value to be exceeded and a popup notification should be generated. snmpwalk hostname |
