Connect with a dial-up account
Okay, you're all set up with your new telephone modem Internet account and you want to actually connect and go to the web. There are several ways to do this.
Connect automatically
If you checked the box, "Connect automatically when needed," as explained on the previous page, then you can just single-click on the Mail icon or the Safari browser icon (or any other browser you choose) in your Dock. The Mac will automatically dial up your connection and log on, then open the application. If you have any trouble doing that, manually log on to the Internet yourself, as explained below, and then open your browser.
Use the modem status icon
If you have the modem status icon in your menu bar, go to it and choose "Connect." You'll hear the modem start squeaking and the icon in the menu bar will send off "sound waves" to indicate that you are connecting and connected.
If the modem icon is not in your menu bar, you can add it; see the opposite page. Once you are connected to the Internet, open your browser or email application and surf or check your mail.
If you choose "Open Internet Connect…," you'll get the dialog box shown on the opposite page.
If you have the modem icon in the menu bar, the animated sound waves give you a visual clue that you are connected.
Use Internet Connect
If you do not have the modem status icon in your menu bar, open the Applications window (click the Applications icon in a Finder window Sidebar or press Command Option A). Then find "Internet Connect" and double-click it. You'll get the dialog box shown below. Click the Connect button to connect to the Internet. Then open your browser or email application and surf or check your mail.
Tip You can close the Internet Connect window while you're online. But then when you make it active again, this dialog box is gone. If this happens to you, single-click the "Internet Connect" icon in the Dock. Then from the File menu at the top of your monitor, choose "New Connection Window" (or press Command N) to get the dialog box back.
When you open Internet Connect, its icon appears in the Dock. To keep the icon in the Dock so you don't have to open the Applications window every time you want to go to the Internet, press on the icon to get the pop-up menu, then choose "Keep In Dock." Or use the status icon in the menu bar, as mentioned above and on the opposite page.
Disconnect your dial-up account
To disconnect from the Internet, click the "Disconnect" button (once you are connected and online, the "Connect" button changes to "Disconnect"). |
