Installing NonPlug and Play Hardware

Setting up User Accounts" in Chapter 16.

To install a nonPlug and Play device:

1. If the device includes a setup program on CD or floppy, or if you've downloaded one from the manufacturer's web site, run it now.

2. Connect the device to your PC, as described in "Connecting Devices to Your Computer" earlier in this chapter.

3. Choose Start > Control Panel > Printers and Other Hardware > Add Hardware (under See Also in the task pane).

4. Click Next to skip the Welcome page.

The wizard searches for the new device (Figure 8.11 ).

Figure 8.11. You can't skip this search for nonPlug and Play hardware, even though it's unsuccessful in most cases.

If the wizard finds it, you can install the correct driver, follow the onscreen instructions to finish the wizard, and skip the rest of these steps. Most of the time, the wizard won't find the device and instead prompts

you to find it; continue to the next step.

5. On the Is the Hardware Connected page, select the first option, Yes, I Have Already Connected the Hardware; then click Next.

6. On the next page, select the device that you're trying to install (Figure 8.12 ).

Figure 8.12. If your device doesn't appear in the list of installed devices, scroll to the bottom of the list and choose Add a New Hardware Device.

7. On the next page, specify how you want to install the device:

To search your computer's ports and slots for nonPlug and Play devices, select the first option, Search for and Install the Hardware Automatically (Recommended) (Figure 8.13 ).

Figure 8.13. If you select this option and Windows finds the new device, it installs the driver automatically, and you're done. If Windows doesn't find the device, proceed to the next step.

To skip the automated detection process, select the second option, Install the Hardware That I Manually Select from a List (Advanced).

8. On the next page, select a hardware type in the list, or select Show All Devices (refer to Figure 8.5); then click Next.

9. On the next page, select the device manufacturer and correct model (Figure 8.14 ); then click Next.

Figure 8.14. Click Have Disk if the driver resides on a local or network drive, a CD, or a floppy.
