Billions of Shades of Gray

If the real world would simply perform as all the theories tell us, grayscale images would fly off the printing press with deep, rich tones and an incredible dynamic range, and CMYK images would simulate every color in the rainbow. But the real world doesn't pay much attention to theories, so we need to help the process along. Spot colorswhether in the form of bump plates, solid spot areas, or duotonesare great ways to do this. After all, if you're trying to faithfully reproduce an elephant, you want to listen to (or see) as many different perspectives as you can.
