Preproofing

When we compared the test images on the print test with the digital files viewed on our reference monitor, we found that our custom ICC profile, in combination with solid monitor characterization, gave us a very accurate on-screen view of the CMYK data in Photoshop.

We also used our ICC profiles to provide accurate viewing of the color within InDesign CS. This proved surprisingly useful: in several cases we went back and edited the images after we had seen them in context on the page.

For hard-copy preproofing, we used the press ICC profile as our source profile and a custom profile for the Epson Stylus Photo 2200 printer with Epson Enhanced Matte paper that we built using GretagMacbeth's ProfileMaker Pro 4.1.5 software as our output profile.

For non-color proofing, we built PDF files for each chapter and emailed them to our editors. Our editors exported their comments as small Acrobat FDF files and e-mailed them to us; we reimported these comment files into the original PDF files before making final edits in pages. We killed as few trees as possible during the production of this book.
