Installing the Project and Media Files onto Your Local Hard Disk

1.

Insert the FCP HDHOT DVD into your computer. You must copy the files from the DVD to your local hard disk. The DVD player is too slow to run the files directly from the DVD itself.

2.

Create a new folder on your boot disk called FCP Projects.

The boot diskthe one that contains the operating systemis generally displayed in the top-right corner of your computer screen and is often named Macintosh HD.

3.

Copy the entire FCP HOT files folder from the DVD into the FCP Projects folder. All the lessons and media for this book are contained inside the FCP HOT files folder.

The nice thing about using the FCP Projects folder is that as you create new projects in the future, not just for this book, but during your real-life editing, you store them in the FCP Projects folder. You'll learn more about how to use this organizational structure in Chapter 1.

(After my long rant about the need for two hard drives to edit, why am I telling you to copy all these book files to one drive? Because I've specifically designed these files for this DVD. For these tutorials, you can get away with using a single drive. In real life, you'll need two.)

The Movies folder you can copy or leave on the DVD, whichever you prefer.

NOTE | How to Open Lesson Files

The lesson and media files that you just installed to your local hard drive are used throughout this book. There are two ways to open lesson files:

Method 1

1.

Open Final Cut Pro.

2.

Choose File > Open (or press Cmd+O).

3.

Open the boot disk (often called Macintosh HD, but not always).

4.

Open the FCP Projects folder.

5.

Open the FCP HOT files folder.

6.

Open the Lessons folder.

7.

Select the project file you want to open, for example: Chapter 02 Lesson.

8.

Click Open.

Method 2

1.

From the Finder, open the boot disk (often called Macintosh HD, but not always).

2.

Locate and open the FCP Projects folder.

3.

Open the FCP HOT files folder.

4.

Open the Lessons folder.

5.

Double-click the project file you want to open, for example: Chapter 02 Lesson.

You can select whichever of these two methods is most convenient for you.

After you've opened a lesson file, you can easily find it again inside Final Cut by choosing File > Open Recent and selecting the file you want to reopen.

Also, the next time you start Final Cut, it will automatically open the last project you were working on, unless you have unchecked Open last project on application launch, which is part of Final Cut Pro > User Preferences on the General tab.

If you want to go back to the original project as it was before you started making changes (or go back to the last time you saved the project), choose File > Revert. Click OK to agree to losing all changes.
