Chapter 9. Picking a Networking Dream TeamA key component of an integrated learning model is assessment. How can management determine who has acquired the skill sets and who has not? How do they decide how to reward individuals based on their skills? Proctored exams and certifications offer tools to ensure that the most qualified and talented knowledge workers within an organization are identified and recognized. Research indicates that employers that have certified talent on staff are more productive than those without. (See Figure 9-1.) Figure 9-1. The Productivity Advantage of Certified Staff[1]
According to a 2002 industry data from International Data Corporation (IDC) on certifications, IT managers and buyers associate a high level of credibility with certifications. [2] Employers and customers perceive certified employees as "worth the investment" it takes to prepare those individuals. Figure 9-2. Certifications Build Credibility
The tendency for employers to consider certified talent as individuals who might leave the organization for better job prospects appears to be a thing of the past. Employers encourage certifications to generate skill and versatility among employees and to foster employee loyalty through a commitment to lifelong learning.[3] Figure 9-3 shows the top three value propositions certifications provide to employees.
