Council, Counsel

These terms are not uncommon and are, therefore, important ones to use correctly. One means to "advise"; the other refers to a committee. Read the following examples and then answer the preview questions.

The council will meet at two this afternoon.

The question will be considered at the council meeting.

The firm asked their lawyers to counsel them in the matter of bankruptcy.

Please counsel us concerning the two rules.

A council is a committee. To counsel is to "give advice." Counsel can also be used as a noun, meaning the advice itself. A third use of counsel is to mean lawyer, as in "Counsel advised her to remain silent." (Hint: Think of the second c in council as standing for committee.)
