-mit-, -mis-

Several words with this root, from the Latin mittere, meaning "to send," were discussed in previous lessons. Remit, submit, admit, commit, transmit, permit, and emit have the root meaning "to send" as their base. Other forms of these verbs, particularly noun forms, use the -mis- form of the root: remission, submission, admission, and so on. A missive is a letter or other matter that is sent somewhere. Based on this information, how would you define a missile? What about mission and intermission?
