Views are important in Impress because of the nature of presentations. Impress makes it easy to switch among a variety of views with the click of a button, so that you can work efficiently. You can choose from the following five views:

  • Normal view This is the default view in Impress, and the one you will likely work in most often. It displays three panes at oncea

Slide pane, a drawing pane, and a

Task paneand you can further customize it to suit your preferences. The drawing pane in the middle of the screen shows one slide at a time, and is best for editing your slides and paging back and forth among them. The

Slide pane on the left displays your presentation in slide sorter view so that you can see your entire presentation at a glance and quickly navigate among all the slides. The

Task pane on the right displays one of four panes depending on the task you're currently engaged in. When you first create a presentation, it displays the

Layouts pane because you're most likely to want to use this pane to change the layout of your slides. You can hide or move the

    Slide pane and the

Task pane if you want, although the advantage of this view is that you can work all three panes at once.

  • Outline view Shows the title and secondary text of slides. You can easily and quickly scroll through your presentation, looking through the text. By default, the

Task pane does not appear in this view because you are not likely to use it when working exclusively on text.

The Outline view shows text from several slides at once so you can focus on composing your thoughts.

    TIPS

    The

Task pane switches automatically when you initiate a task it can help with, but you can also display a different

Task pane manually. To do so, click the

View list arrow, and then select a different task.

You can further customize any view if you want. To display or hide the

Task p ane at any time, choose

    Task Pane from the

View menu from any view. To display or hide the

Slide pane at any time, choose

    Slide Pane from the

    View menu from any view.

    TIP

To change the number of slides displayed at once in

    Slide Sorter view, click the

    Up or

    Down arrow of the

Slides Per Row button on the

    Slide View toolbar.

The Slide Sorter view shows several slides at once, allowing you to rearrange your presentation by dragging slides from one place to another.

  • Notes view When you add speaker notes to your slides, you can view those notes, along with the slides the notes go with, in this view. The notes appear at the bottom of the slide, with one slide and its notes showing at a time as you move through your presentation with

    PageUp and

    PageDown . See

102 Add Notes to a Presentation for help with adding notes.

  • Handout view If you want to print your presentation as a handout for your audience (see

    85 Print a Presentation and

103 Create Presentation Handouts ), you can get a preview of the presentation handout by displaying the

    Handout view. The

Handout view shows four slides per page.

  • Slide Sorter view Shows multiple slides in a thumbnail form so that you can get a general overview of your slides, as many as 12 or more at a time. Depending on your monitor, you can probably make out most of the text and graphics on each slide. You can drag any slide from one location in your presentation to another while viewing the slides, making it simple to rearrange your presentation.

The Handout view shows how your audience's printed presentation will appear on each printed page.

NOTE

With four slides per page, your audience will be able to read your slides on their handouts, yet you use far less paper than if Impress printed one slide per page.

To change from view to view, click the tab of the view you want to work with. You can also display the appropriate view by choosing options from the

View menu. For example, if you're viewing notes at the top of the work area in

Notes view and decide you want to change a slide's graphic, you can return to

Normal view to make the edits more easily to your slide by clicking the

Normal tab or by choosing

View, Normal from the menu bar.

Generally, you work in

Normal view, but if you want to see a different view of the current slide, you can click another tab. The toolbars above the work area adjust to provide quick access to the most commonly used tools for the current view. For example, when you are working in

Slide Sorter view, the

Slide Sorter toolbar and

Slide View toolbar appear in addition to the

Standard toolbar (which always appears by default). When you are working in

Outline view, the

Slide Sorter and

Slide View toolbar do not appear by default, but the

Text Formatting toolbar does.
