virtual server

A collection of services that appears to clients as a physical server. Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 uses Internet protocol virtual servers for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3), Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP), and Internet Message Access Protocol 4 (IMAP4). Virtual servers are also used when configuring instances of Exchange Server 2003 on cluster servers running the Microsoft Cluster Service.

Code written with the express intention of replicating itself. A virus attempts to spread from computer to computer by attaching itself to a host program. It may damage hardware, software, or data. See also Trojan horse, worm.




Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)

A Microsoft Windows Server 2003 service that enables backup software (such as Windows 2003 Backup) to create a snapshot of Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 data at a specific point in time and back up from that snapshot.
