Getting Started

This self-paced training kit contains hands-on procedures to help you learn securing your Windows 2000 network infrastructure. To complete some of these procedures, you must have as many as four computers networked together or connected to a larger network. All computers must be capable of running Windows 2000 Server and meeting its minimum hardware requirements.

These exercises have been tested using virtual machine software. You can consider using virtual machine software to reduce the number of physical computers required to complete the exercises in this book.

The exercises in this book require you to make changes to your servers. This might cause undesirable results if you are connected to a larger network. You should not perform any of these exercises on production computers without testing them first and adapting them to your network configuration. Check with your network administrator before attempting these exercises.

Hardware Requirements

To complete all of the exercises in this training kit, each computer must have the following minimum configuration. All hardware should be on the Microsoft Windows 2000 Hardware Compatibility List.

Intel Pentium II or later processor.

128 MB RAM

2 GB hard disk drive

100 Mbps network interface adapter

CD-ROM drive

Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

An Apple Macintosh computer that meets the minimum requirements for OS X 10.1.
