H
- header
- Network protocols prepend a data structure on each piece of data in preparation for transmission. This data structure, known as a header, bears all the information needed to ensure that the data gets delivered and, if applicable, for an acknowledgment to be returned.
- hop
- An arbitrary measure of distance used by distance-vector routing protocols. A hop is equal to one router. If there are 10 routers between you and your destination, you are said to be 10 hops away.
- host
- Any machine that can engage in a communications session using TCP/IP is known as a host.
- hostmaster
- A hostmaster is someone whose occupation is to design and manage an IP address block, including its subdivision into subnetworks. Although that might sound like a trivial job, I can assure you that a good hostmaster is worth his weight in gold. There is no end of grief that can be encountered in a network built using a mismanaged or unmanaged network address block.
