Chapter Summary
TCP/IP is an amazing but enigmatic communications protocol. It allows two machines separated by as much as half the world and who-knows-how-many- networks to communicate as easily as if they were sitting next to each other. Two keys that enable that type of communication are the IP packet and the IP address system. This chapter shows you the various stages of an IP packet's life and how it gets pushed through a network (or multiple networks) en route to its destination. You also saw some of the mathematics on which the IP address system is based. Understanding the mathematics of the IP address system helps you become a much more astute TCP/IP user. The next chapter takes you another layer deeper into IP addressing, showing you how to create subnetworks within an IP network. You also discover why you would want to do that.
