M
- maximum segment size
- The maximum segment size (MSS) is a field inside the TCP header that tells the machine it is sent to exactly how large of a TCP segment it can accept. This value is specified in bytes.
- milliseconds
- Thousands of a second. TCP/IP contains many tools for measuring the performance of a network, and those tools all use milliseconds as the standard measure of time elapsed.
- modem
- The word modem is an acronym of the technical functions of this device: modulator-demodulator. A modem performs several functions. First, it establishes a connection on your command by dialing up the telephone number of another modem. Second, after that connection is established, it accepts digital signals from your computer and translates them into analog sounds that are transmitted across the telephone network. Your modem also accepts incoming analog signals and translates them back into digital signals, or data, that is handed to your computer's network interface.
