T

TCP

The Transmission Control Protocol that operates at Layer 4 of the OSI reference model and enables guaranteed or reliable delivery of IP packets.

TFTP

The Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) is one of the many utilities built into the TCP/IP family of protocols. This mechanism enables you to transfer files between hosts with a minimum of complexity.

three-way handshake

Each and every communications session using TCP begins with a three-way handshake between the source and destination machines. This handshake enables the two machines to coordinate their activities and ensure reliable delivery of future packet transmissions.

TIA

The Telecommunications Industry Association sets open technical standards for the telecommunications industry. One of its more significant contributions to data networking was its collaboration with the EIA to produce performance-based categories of standards for network wire.

Time-To-Live

The Time-To-Live (TTL) field tracks the number of network devices that the IP packet passes through. When a certain threshold is reached, the packet is discarded.

tracert

A tool that uses ICMP to help you map out the actual path that your IP packets take when sent through a TCP/IP network.

traceroute

Some operating systems name the ICMP trace utility traceroute. Traceroute is the same as tracert.

transmission medium

The transmission facility that connects your computer's network interface card to the network.

trunk line

A high-capacity telecommunications line that can carry multiple dial-up sessions simultaneously.
