Chapter 13. Smiling and Dialing

What You Will Learn

After reading this chapter, you should be able to answer the following questions:

What is the Internet?

What is the Internet's official network communications protocol?

What are your options for accessing the Internet from home?

Is the fastest access technology always the best choice for you?

Under what circumstances might you find yourself still using a modem with a dedicated connection to a cable TV network?

The previous chapter shows you how to connect your computer to a TCP/IP network. Truth be told, there are other ways to connect. Those ways might seem a bit antiquated, but are still quite useful and necessary: good old-fashioned dial-up modem and telephone line.

This chapter explains a bit more precisely what the Internet is and why that's important to you. Then you see some of the ways you can connect to the Internet. You also learn some of the ups and downs of each approach and how to set up your computer to connect to a TCP/IP network using a dial-up connection.
