Chapter Summary

Residential consumers can choose from different ways to connect to the Internet. Each access technology has its own abilities and limitations, which can bias your decision. An even greater influence in your access technology selection is a bit more pragmatic: What's available in your neighborhood? Despite all the technological advances in networking technologies, dial-up access using modems and POTS lines continues to soldier on. In this chapter, you learn some of the reasons modems and POTS lines are still quite necessary and how you can use them to access the Internet.

You also learn how to set up and configure your computer for a dial-up connection, as well as how to keep the wizard honest! Chapter 14, "Taking the Next Step," shows you what to do when things don't quite go as expected!
