Step by Step: What to do

Below are the steps you will need to follow to get yourself connected to the Internet so you can browse the World Wide Web and do email.

If you use or plan to use America Online, you can skip the entire Internet setup process. When you turn on your new Mac for the first time and it asks how you want to connect, click the button that says you'll do it yourself later. When your computer's up and running, insert an AOL disk and go through its simple process. AOL acts as your Internet Service Provider.

130132 to see if there's anything you need there.

These are the basic steps to follow:

1.

Choose an Internet Service Provider, call them up, and pay your money (see the previous two pages).

2.

Get your modem hooked up (see the opposite page).

3.

Get the setup information from your provider. See pages 120121.

4.

Either walk through the setup process if you're turning on your Mac for the first time, and fill in the information. (See pages 122125.)

Or do it yourself: During the initial setup process, click the button that says you'll connect later. After you get your Mac all put together, then use the Network preferences. (See pages 126129.)

5.

After you've set up the preferences, you're ready to connect.

If you have a broadband account, just open your browser or email program; see page 130.

If you have a telephone modem with a dial-up account, use Internet Connect; see pages 130131.

6.

Once you're online, see page 131 about how to disconnect, if necessary (it's not necessary to disconnect if you have a broadband account).
