  • Remove a Stored Network Place Password

In Chapter 9, "Playing Nicely with Others," I showed you how to create a network place. Sometimes these network places require a password to establish a connection, and XP offers to store these passwords so that you're not prompted every time.

Sometimes, though, the password for that network location changes, and you need to submit a different password for the connection. You can do this in one of two ways: One, you can delete and re-create the Network Connection. However, XP has been known to retain the old password even with the re-created connection.

A better way: use the Manage Network Passwords feature. You can access this feature by opening the user account in the User Account Control Panel applet and then looking under the Related Tasks section for the Manage Network Passwords task.

Or, you can use Start | Run, and then type control userpasswords2 to launch the User Accounts dialog box. Choose the Advanced tab and then click the Manage Passwords button.

Either way, you'll get the Stored User Names and Passwords dialog box shown in Figure 14-3.

    Figure 14-3. Managing Network Passwords.

To edit a password for a connection, just select the connection and click Properties.
