Building a LibraryStockpiling Ammo

Linking Your Pages and Updating Library Items," you'll see how to edit your library item and have it automatically update on any pages within your site that use itthe real power of libraries.

Before we begin, if you closed the Assets panel after the previous task, open it again by choosing Window > Assets.

Here's how to add an item to the library:

1.

Click within the text at the top of your page that reads Site Name; then in the Tag Selector on Dreamweaver's Status bar, click <div#masthead>.

Chapter 8.

4.

Click OK to continue.

The header content and navigation bar are added to the library. Notice that in the Library pane's preview area, the header content looks different than it does on your page. Again, this is because of the CSS formatting that the header uses.

When an item is added to the library, you're prompted to name the item. It's a good idea to not only name your library items but to use some descriptive text to help you remember what's what.

5.

Enter a descriptive name for your library item.

Noteworthy

As you begin adding items to the library, Dreamweaver automatically creates a Library folder in your site folder where it saves each library item as a separate file (take a look in your Files panel to see).

6.

If Dreamweaver displays the Update Files dialog box, click Update.

Notice back on your page that your header content now contains yellow highlighting. This is a visual indication that this area of your page is a library item. In fact, you can't even highlight any text in this areait's entirely locked.

Now you can make changes to your library item, and it will update automatically on any pages where it's being used, as you'll see once you've created some additional pages and linked them.

In this chapter, you're adding only one library item, which is placed on a single page (your 83 page). But when you're working on your pages, you can add as many items to the library as you want: navigation bars, copyright notices, buttons with hyperlinksanything. Once you've added an item or two to your library, you can start lobbing them onto your pages like grenades into a pillbox. And you certainly don't have to limit yourself to Design Pages. You can drop library items right on new, blank pages, too. In this chapter though, we'll stick with Design Files so you can get a feel for how the library works.

Now it's time begin building a web sitealbeit a small and simple oneso you can see how everything ties together.
