Learner Buy-In

Learner buy-in refers to the process of generating adoption within an organization. Achieving learner buy-in is a two-step process: identifying incentives for e-learning adoption and facilitating its use. Identifying incentives means demonstrating to line managers or supervisors that learning is indeed an essential business function and its adoption directly impacts departmental productivity through reduced cost, better time utilization, and improved revenue. Few line managers would shun an opportunity to reduce cost, improve utilization of their team, and improve revenue. When the line managers support e-learning, employees adopt it.

In Chapter 4, "BearingPoint Makes Grand Slam with Internet LearningA Case Study," the discussion illustrates how the organization adopted e-learning wholesale to familiarize the entire work force with e-business. The potential productivity advantages from arming the employees with such knowledge offered a compelling incentive for the organization to commit resources to e-learning.

Facilitating use of e-learning includes ensuring that production and delivery factors address learner needs and circumstances. Video lectures available for downloaded for later viewing, that are accessible to those who connect over dial up, or that are accessible through a learner-friendly portal, might boost the adoption of e-learning.
