The Fourth Imam
Imam Sajjad, Zayn aI-'Abidin
(P.B.U.H.)
The name of Imam Sajjad was All.
He was horn on the
fifteenth of the month of Jamadi
al-Thani in 3! AH. In
Madinah.His father is Imam Husayn (P.B.U.H.)
and his mother is
Shahr Banu. In accordance with
the Divine decree, Imam Husayn
appointed Imam Sajjad to be the
people's Imam after him.When Imam Husayn (P.B.U.H.) was
martyred at Karbala.
Imam Sajjad was also present. But
since he was sick he was
unable to fight against the forces
of Yazid along with the
others, and thus he was not martyred.During his journey from Karbala,
he delivered speeches
in the towns of Kufah and Damascus,
and he informed the
people of his father's holy intentions.
In this way he
disgraced Yazid.Imam Sajjad liked orphans, the
poor and the
handicapped to come to his house
and be his guests.
He used to give food and clothing
to many families who
were poor and needy.Imam Sajjad was so earnest in worshipping
Allah that he
was called "Zayn al-'Abidin", which
means "the adornment
of worshippers", while "al-Sajjad"
means "one who
prostrates long and often".
He lived in this world for fifty-seven
years, and passed
away on the twenty-fifth of the
month of Muharram in the
year 95 AH, in Madinah. He was
buried in the Baqi
graveyard there. Eternal peace
be upon him.
