I have always liked type, so creating special effect type is a great treat.
This color plate shows the steps I took in Technique 46 to evolve plain black type into metallic copper type.
I started with black type set in the Copperplate font, and then applied the Bas Relief filter to give the type a beveled edge and added light.
Then, I headed into the Layer Style dialog box and applied Drop and Inner Shadows, and a copper colored Overlay.
Next, I used curves to adjust the tone and contrast of the type. Finally, I added a new layer with gray type shaped just like the original black type, and applied the Chrome filter using the Overlay blending mode.
