PDF , which stands for Portable Document Format, is a standard file format that can be opened and read by Preview and Adobe Reader. PDF is a good format for distributing a formatted document when you're not sure what software the document's recipient has. Most computer users have some kind of PDF reader software; if they don't, they can download Adobe Reader for free.
The Print dialog offers two methods for saving a document as a PDF file: the quick way and the almost-as-quick way.
1. | Set options as desired in the Print dialog's panes. |
2. | In any pane of the Print dialog (Figure 36 ), choose Save as PDF from the PDF button's menu (Figure 65 ). |
3. | Use the Save that appears (Figure 66 ) to enter a name and select a disk location for the PDF file. Figure 66. Use this dialog to enter a name, select a location, and Save a document as a file. |
4. | Click Save. |
The Save as PDF command creates a high-resolution PDF file that may be quite large. To create a smaller PDF file suitable for onscreen viewing and e-mail, choose Compress PDF in step 2.
Choosing Save PDF as PostScript from the PDF button's menu (Figure 65 ) saves the document as a PostScript file. It can then be printed by PostScript printers or imagesetters. This is an advanced feature that most users will never need to use.
