Stacking OrderBoth QuarkXPress and InDesign let you stack objects on top of each other in two ways: stacking order and layers (XPress 3 and 4 do not offer layers). We'll discuss layers and the Layers palette in Chapter 24. Here we cover stacking order, the vertical arrangement of objects within a layer. InDesign has the same four stacking commands for controlling the vertical order of page objects as in XPress (you can find these commands in the Arrange submenu, under the Object menu):
Another fast way of selecting these commands is to use the context menu: You'll see these same features if you right-click on an object in Windows, or Control-click it on the Macintosh. Note that grouping affects stacking order: InDesign rearranges the grouped objects so that they're placed immediately below the topmost member of the group. We'll discuss how to select objects which are stacked on top of each other in the next chapter. |
